                               About the Speakers

​​Carlette C. Smith, Retired RN and NHA, MA, BSN, BA is a graduate of University of Alabama at Birmingham. Carlette founded Human Resource Options (HRO, LLC) in 2003 with the goal of presenting information that would enhance the knowledge and skills of all health care professionals, and the community at large.  Information is provided through the presentation of lectures, discussions, handouts, Power Point presentations and videos. The seminars are designed to enhance knowledge of current trends and updates in healthcare and other requested topics related to providing quality of care in hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living and home care.  HRO provides educational opportunities for healthcare providers to earn contact hours for license renewal.  All classes are open to the public. Mrs. Smith has over forty years of experience in the health care field. Her past responsibilities included: Director of Nursing, Assistant Director of Nursing; Education Coordinator, Nurse Manager, Staff Nurse and Clinical Instructor at a School of Nursing. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Psychology, Master of Art in Education, Bachelor of Science in Nursing at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.  As President, Owner, and Coordinator of HRO, she also participates in speaking at seminars, church events, schools, and senior events.

 Marvin (Mac) Chandler, BS, MS, Licensed Funeral Director for funerals, cremations, cemetery services  and Pre-Planning Advisor, for Ridout’s  Valley Chapel. “Mac” lectures at seminars, conventions, locally and state wide and in-house counseling to prepare all citizens of pre-needs for funerals and cremations on a personal pre-needs basis to lock in on current price and eliminates families from making hasty decisions during a most stressful time to allow each individual to make their own decisions prior to death.

 Luis F. Pineda, MD, MSHA, Executive Chef, is a practicing Hematologist & Oncologist in Birmingham, AL.  He still gets frustrated when his cancer patients don’t enjoy eating because of the biochemical changes that occurs with taste and smell.  He attended culinary school and became an Executive Chef. The end result: A cookbook called Prescription to Taste: A Cooking Guide for Cancer Patients. It is full of chili-laced entrees and desserts (to spark appetite and squelch nausea). Dr. Pineda is Owner of Cooking with Cancer, INC., a non-profit organization that provides an alternative option of nutrition through re-stimulating their affected taste buds for cancer patients and their families. He is a graduate of University of San Carlos (MD), UAB (MSHA), University of Nebraska, and Culinary Institute of VA College.  Nutrition and Cancers we see Today: At the conclusion of this presentation, participant will have knowledge of: **Physiology of food and cancer **Cooking for patients undergoing chemo and radiation **Understanding the breakdown of taste and smell **Obesity and inflammation.                                                                   Lynn M. Phifer, RN, BSN, MPA, CRRN, Hospital Educator and Employee Health Nurse at HealthSouth Lakeshore in Birmingham. Vanderbilt University School of Nursing, Troy State University, Trenton State College and Class Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. Lynn is licensed in Nursing in Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, and New Jersey. She BCLS and ACLS instructor, CRRN instructor and certified in CPI.

 An Overview of Stroke: At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will have knowledge of**Two major types of STROKE- Ischemic/clot and Hemorrhagic/bleed **Different types of Left-Stroke vs Right Stroke, including safety **Risk factors that are not modifiable and those that are modifiable**Patient education to help prevent another STROKE.                                             

 Matthew “Matt” Talley, ESQ, LICSW, Cornelius & Talley LAW, PC, is a graduate of the University of Alabama:  Juris Doctorate (2005), Masters of Social Work (1998), Licensed Certified Social Worker (1999,) Bachelor of Science in Psychology (1994). He is a member of the Alabama and Birmingham Bar Associations and has practice experience in Jefferson, Shelby and St. Clair counties. Gabrielle Metz, MSW, LICSW, Psychotherapist PTSD Team at the Birmingham VA Medical Center. She earned her Bachelor’s in Social Work at the University of Montevallo and Master’s in Social Work at University of Alabama. She previously worked at CJFS as a clinical social worker in counseling, case management and caregiver support.                                                                                   Memory Enhancement Skills:   At the conclusion of this presentation, participant will have knowledge of: **Memory and attention related problems, commonly known as forgetting **Skill sets that allow participants learn techniques to minimize many disturbances in their daily lives.**Strategies to enhance cognitive skills.                                                                        

Cynthia Watts, BA, (Samford University), DISC Personality Profile Certification, Certified Life and Work Coach, Watts Management Solutions. Cynthia is the Children’s Director at The First Baptist Church of Birmingham on Lakeshore Drive (1917-present). Previous employment: Director of Quality and Compliance, University of Florida, College of Pharmacy (2014-2016); Watts Management Solutions (1999-present, where is a consultant, speaker, team facilitator and corporate trainer for businesses with accreditation preparation, Quality Improvement, Patient Experience, Leadership Development, Employee Coaching, and Customer Relations.                                                                              Ethics: An Absolute Necessity or an Annoying Nuisance: At the conclusion of this presentation, participant will have knowledge of: **Examples of ethical and non-ethical behavior **Set goals and deadlines for any correction or improvement that might be needed in their workplace **How to include ethical behavior in their mission/vision.                                                      

Dr. Srinivas Mallempati, Pain Medicine, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Sports Medicine, Grandview Medical Center, is  adult graduate of J.J.M. Medical College (General Medicine), University of Texas, South Western Medical School (Residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Sports Medicine), University of Missouri-Columbia (Pain Management) and SUNY Health Services at Brooklyn (Internship).He is currently on staff at Grandview Medical Center and has admission privileges at Princeton and St. Vincent’s East. He is a member of the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, American Board of (Certified in Pain Management, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation). Dr. Mallempati is licensed in Alabama and Kentucky,
