Brenda H. O’Neal, MSN, RN
Brenda is a Registered Nurse and Clinical Nurse Specialist.  She is a highly skilled career professional with more than thirty years of practical experience in hospital, community health, nursing education and primary care environments.

She is established in Psychiatric and Mental Health patient support, including assessment, counseling, education regarding medications and treatment, lab work, documentation with care planning for diagnosis, and administration of treatment procedures. She is computer skilled, managing students through Web-CT. She is proficient in documentation/record maintenance/paperwork to ensure accuracy and confidentiality of patients and students.

Brenda is currently a Nursing Instructor/Department Chairperson at Jefferson State Community College, Birmingham, Alabama. She also works as a Relief Supervisor/Relief Staff Nurse at Hill Crest Hospital.  Her previous jobs were: Assistant Patient Care Coordinator (BMC Montclair Hospital); Clinical Care Coordinator (Alcohol Recovery Center); Clinical Instructor (Tuskegee Institute); and CU Coordinator (Crawford Long Memorial Hospital, Atlanta, Georgia).

Brenda earned a Masters of Science in Nursing (UAB) and Bachelors of Science in Nursing (Tuskegee Institute). Her professional affiliations are with the Alabama Nurses Association, American Nursing Association, and the National League for Nursing. Her Community Services are Health Ministry Leader at Hopewell Baptist Church; is actively involved and participates with a foreign mission in Bluefield, Nicaragua; and participates in the Transcultural Nursing Society. Brenda has presented several topics for the H&H Continual Health Education Organization.

 

Dr. Marvin “Mitch” Shelton, PhD, CRNP
Dr. Shelton began his health career as a Paramedic in 1978 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. His career developed and expanded over many years in Nursing, Health Care, and Management professions:

  • 1979: Joined the United States Air Force and worked as an Emergency Room Medic.
  • 1980: Entered the United States Air Force program at Valdosta State College.
  • 1982: Earned his Bachelors of Science in Nursing and was later commissioned as a Nurse Officer in the United States Air Force in the areas of Medical/Surgical Nursing, Infection Control, and Nursing Supervisor.
  • 1985: Earned his Masters of Science in Nursing in the area of Community Mental Health Nursing at Northwestern State University of Louisiana.
  • 1986: After leaving the Air Force, worked in areas of Medical/Surgical Nursing, Critical Care Nursing, and Assistant Hospital Administrator.
  • 1993: Nursing Education Instructor (The University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa)
  • 1999: Ph.D. in Health Education/Health Promotions (The University of Alabama). Worked as Assistant Professor (The University of Alabama). His academic and clinical instruction experience is in Mental Health Nursing, Medical/Surgical Nursing, and Critical Care Nursing. He has provided academic instruction in Web-based Nursing Research and Health Informatics.
  • 2003: Director of Information Technology for the Institute for Rural Health Research at The University of Alabama School of Medicine (Tuscaloosa campus). In this position, he provided technical support to the Institute, data collection, data management, and participated in grants and research projects.
  • 2006: Completed the Family Nurse Practitioner Program at Samford University (Birmingham, Alabama).
  • 2007: Nurse Practitioner at Indian Rivers Mental Health Center, where he provided Psychiatric Services to adult clients in the Outpatient Clinic.
  • 2008: Nursing Academic and Clinical Instructor in Mental Health and Adult Nursing at Jefferson State Community College (Birmingham, Alabama).

 

2009 Speakers

Carmen Nicole Antoine

Nicole is currently at Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta, Georgia as a Manager/Project Coordinator.

Her current job responsibilities include:

  • Manages grant/funded programs for the Division of Infectious Diseases
  • Organizes and manages all Ryan White Grants-related activity for the division
  • Current member of the Ryan White Planning Council
  • Coordinates outreach and support initiatives to underserved communities, i.e., women of color, transgender community, ex-offenders, etc
  • Coordinates the Consumer Advisory Board for St Joseph’s Mercy Care Services and Emory Infectious Diseases
  • Supervises all Ryan White staff at Emory University Infectious Diseases Clinic
  • Represents the program in various local and national settings.

Nicole completed a Masters of Social Work Degree, with a concentration in Health/Mental Health at Clark-Atlanta University School of Social Work, Atlanta, Georgia. She earned a Bachelors of Art in English and Sociology at Dillard University, New Orleans, Louisiana. She also attended the St. Vincent’s Academy in Shreveport, Louisiana.

The topic that she speaks on today is: Psychosocial Issues and HIV/AIDS: Impact on Adherence to Compliance of Care. Her topics include:

  • Applying the biopsychosocial model to HIV/AIDS Case Studies
  • Conducting biopsychosocial assessments of the HIV/AIDS client
  • Accessing care and adherence to treatment
  • Acting on the assessment and tips for managing care


Ann Earley, LPN - Risk Management Consultant
Ann was a Nurse Consultant for a long-term care pharmacy for over ten years. She has observed medication passes and drug regimen reviews with pharmacists in the long term care profession. She has done various other in-services for Nurses in the Long-Term Care Facilities as well as educating administrators and nurses on the compliance for federal and state regulations. Ann has also been a Supervisor in Diagnostic Science in a hospital doing Stress-Testing, EKG'S, Holter Monitors and cardiac monitoring. She has planned and coordinated wellness seminars, and made rounds with physicians.

 

Mercy Ireri
Mercy is currently a Quality Enhancement and Employee Development Division Manager for The Jefferson County Commission, Human Resource Department, Birmingham, Alabama
.

Her Professional Overview includes:

  • 15 year leadership roles in human resources, recruiting, training, employee relations, contract administration, benefits, payroll, financial and risk management, project management, quality enhancement and program evaluation.
  • Experienced HR management professional ideally suited for multitasking, highly analytical and detail oriented.
  • Organize county-wide recruiting, training, staff development and employee relations for 4000+ employees.
  • Familiar with diverse governmental and NGO environments, employment laws, oversight of budgets, consultants, interns, contracts, cooperative agreements and other relevant issues.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, proficient in utilizing Microsoft programs including Word, Excel, Power point, Outlook, and the Internet. Human Resource Information System (HRIS) experience in SAP.

Mercy completed and Advanced Certificate in Human Resource Management, Masters Degree in Business Administration at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Birmingham, Alabama, and a Bachelor of Science in Management with Minor in Computer Science at Samford University, Birmingham, Alabama.

Kimberly Oden
Kimberly is an International Public Speaker/ Multigenerational Consultant, and Conference Leader. She is President of Higher Dimensions Enterprise, Inc. Her goal is to equip today’s leaders to avoid “Leadership Drain” and to recruit and retain the Generation Y population. She has 20+ years in Leadership Roles in Human Resources and Non Profit Administration.

Kimberly earned a Bachelors of Science Degree (1986) and Masters in Public Administration (1989) from Jacksonville State University, Jacksonville, Alabama.

 

Bonnie Powell
Bonnie is a retired Manager of Professional Development Instructor at The University of Alabama at Birmingham.
She has earned certifications in
